Seaside Ayr …

Day 16: Easter Sunday 8 April (8pm, Ayr)

Don't need to tell me twice -
I'm not swimming with the stingers!

An easy day – began with breakfast in bed, including Easter eggs of course! We’d planned to drive to Cairns today but after all the driving of the last two days, the thought of another five hour trip in the car was too much, so we drove an hour, to Townsville instead.

Barra bonus!
We didn’t expect much to be open so we parked at the far end of the Strand, at the Kissing Point lookout and we climbed up to the lookout before walking the length of the Strand, and beyond. Stopped a few times along the way and one of those stops was on the jetty to see what the fisherman were catching. Again, we didn’t expect anything, but amazingly we were just in time to watch one of the men bring in a huge barramundi! It fought for almost five minutes before tiring and there was lots of discussion about the weight of the fish from young and old timers alike. The unanimous verdict was that it would have broken the line if they brought it up any other way, so someone was sent down the ladder to bring it in and the prize was lifted up by the mouth to the shade of the jetty and photographed with his owner many times by the 20 or so of us crammed in the space by this time. It was pretty exciting!

My head on a platter?
We wandered down into the Anzac Memorial Park and stopped in a shady spot for our picnic lunch and gelato. Back to the car and we drove around to the Museum of Tropical Queensland (which turned out to have been only another couple of minutes walking from where we’d had lunch!). The museum had some fantastic exhibitions, including the Butterfly Man of Kuranda (former bank clerk who didn’t like being sent to Townsville for work, so he turned the more lucrative hobby of butterfly and moth collecting for wealthy foreign collectors into a lifetime study), and the Pandora (the ship and crew sent to search for the mutinous crew of the Bounty, but crashed onto the reef before they located too many). There was a lot more to explore so we easily filled in a couple of hours here and even played around with some of the kids activities, as you can see …

Despite all the protection in the world, we managed to catch the sun a bit more than I would have liked, so a long day of walking and wandering saw us head back home for an early dinner and contemplation of what to do tomorrow!
